Q is for Quicksand

Quicksand by Nella Larsen

Quicksand is the story of a mixed race African-American and Danish girl living in America in the 1920s. (I'm about to throw in a lot of spoilers - sorry!) She travels to Copenhagen, where she finds herself more accepted in Danish society and is sought after as a wife by a prominent Danish man, but she misses black people and soon returns back to America. There she marries and settles down but she never loves her husband and is never satisfied in her life.

This book is an interesting exploration of race in America and Europe in the early 20th Century and themes of acceptance and self identity. This book, along with Larsen's other novel Passing are significant works of the Harlem renaissance, a cultural and social movement in the 1920s.
